Generate Free SSL Certificate using ZeroSSL

 Hi all,

Today I am going to explain the process of generating free SSL certificate using ZeroSSL

Pre-requisite

1. We should have our own domain
2. We should be able to add/update the DNS settings like A, CNAME, TXT records

Best free SSL providers

As per my research I found the best free SSL (90 days) certificate providers

1. ZeroSSL
2. Let's Encrypt

In this blog, i'll explain ZeroSSL process

ZeroSSL Free SSL Certificate

1. Navigate to https://zerossl.com/
2. Signup with your email by clicking on "FreeSSL"
3. After email verification, login to zerossl site
4. Click on "New Certificate"
5. 
6. Enter your domain name and click on "Next Step"
7. Default validity is 90 days for free SSL
8. 
9. In the CSR section we have couple of options
10. Default is Auto-Generate CSR enabled
11. Disable Auto-Generate CSR - only your zerossl registered email address with default values
12. Enable Paste Existing CSR - If you have already created a CSR then you can use this option
13. 
14. Finalize your order

Note

ZeroSSL will generate the certificate using signature algorithm SHA-384

In some cases, if SHA-384 based SSL is not valid then we have to mandatory go for alternate "Let's Encrypt". I will explain Let's Encrypt in my next blog.

For every 90 days, we need to renew our certificate in the above mentioned manner.

Download Certificate

1. Navigate to Certificates section
2. Go to Issued tab
3. 
4. Click on "Install"
5. 
6. You can select the Default Format dropdown to select specified server or just leave it default.
7. Download the certificate zip file which will contain 
1. ca_bunder.crt - CA Bundle
2. certificate.crt - Certificate
3. private.key - Private Key

Microsoft Visual Studio Code with Debugger for Chrome for Static Website Pages

Hi all,

Have you used the Microsoft's free VS Code editor for you web development. I think, you should try it.

Today I'll discuss about how to debug from the VS Code without placing breakpoints on Chrome browser.

Pre-requisites

1. VS Code should be installed
2. Debugger for Chrome extension in VS Code

Configuring the debugger

• Once you open your website in the VS Code
• In the activity bar, you will find the debugger icon OR you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+D
• Now, we will "Add Configuration" to our project
• On top of the debug sidebar, you will find an option "Add Configuration"
• Click on "Add Configuration"
• It will prompt you to select out of box provided options like "Chrome, NodeJS"
• Choose Chrome
• Now, launch.json file will be created
• Configure the launch.json file by specifying URL with port number
• Since, our project is of static webpages type, instead of webRoot, we will use "file"

Here is the sample launch.json file

Debug

• Click on the "Start Debugging" button OR press F5
• A new chrome window with debugging enabled will be launched
• Place your breakpoints in VS Code, just by clicking left to the line number in the editor
• Perform the action and your debug will be hit
• Note: You can add conditional debugging by editing the break point

Display your favourite icon for your website in address bar

Hi everyone,

As per my friend request, I have searched for display an icon in the address bar for the website.
It will be useful for website developers.

Please follow this procedure to display icon in address bar for your website:
1. We much have an image in .ico format.
If we don't have an .ico file and have any picture formatted file like .jpeg, .png, then we can convert that into .ico format by using online link http://favicon.htmlkit.com/favicon/ or we can use any picture editing software like GIMP
2. After having the .ico file, edit your webpage source code html file
3. Place this following code in between head tag.
ex:
4. Open in Firefox, Chrome to view this icon in the address bar.
