 Hi folks,

We are used to publishing the npm packages on npmjs.com. Today, I will show how we can publish the npm packages to GitHub and the steps to use those packages.

1. Publishing Packages

Prerequisites

We need to have an account with GitHub

JavaScript native/framework based project with package.json

Add the .npmrc file to your project with the following syntax. Change the OWNER value to your GitHub account or organization name.

@OWNER:registry=https://npm.pkg.github.com

Publishing Process to GitHub

Create personal access token using the following steps

  • Login to GitHub
  • Go to Settings
  • Navigate to "Developer Settings" -> "personal access tokens"
  • Generate token with write:packages access permissions

  • Open terminal in the project folder
  • Execute the command to login
  • npm login --scope=@OWNER --registry=https://npm.pkg.github.com
  • When prompted,
    • Username: GitHub username
    • Password: Personal access token
    • Public e-mail: Your email address
  • Enter the following command to publish the package
  • npm publish

2. Consume/Installing the packages

Prerequisites

We need to have an account with GitHub

Installation

Add the .npmrc file to your project with the following syntax. Change the OWNER value to your GitHub author or organization name.

@OWNER:registry=https://npm.pkg.github.com

Enter the full name @OWNER/package-name-version in dependencies in package.json
Install the dependencies
npm install

Note: If the organization is asking for authorization of personal access token, then you need to authorize from the personal access token section against the token for the respective organization.

Ubuntu - update NPM and NodeJS

Hi folks,

Some people often confuses with NPM update vs Node.js update.

Let me clarify that, NPM (Node Package Manager) is a CLI (Command Line Interface) to manage the JS (JavaScript) packages from https://www.npmjs.com/ or any other external package managers like GitHub.

Node.js is a FrontEnd JavaScript Framework like Vue.js, AngularJS which helps to build the scalable network applications. Node.js® is a JavaScript runtime built on Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine.

NVM (Node Version Manager) and n are command line utilities to manage and switch between Node.js versions.

When you are installed for the first time, you will be installing Node.js from https://nodejs.org/en/download/ which also installs NPM CLI utility.

But when upgrading the NPM or Node.js, it's a different story.

Update NPM

npm install -g npm

Update Node.js with Node version manager (n)

Install the n

sudo npm install -g n

Update the Node.js to stable version

sudo n stable

As of now, the stable version is 16.3.2 which includes NPM 8.1.2

Update the Node.js to current version

sudo n current

As of now, the current version is 17.4.0 with NPM 8.3.1

Check the versions

NPM

npm --version

Node.js

node --version

Hope this helps you to understand the NPM and Node.js difference along with update of individual components.

Go language install and configuration in Windows and Visual Studio Code as IDE

Hi folks,

Today I am going to describe you the best way to install and configure the Go language.

Download

From the Go language from its official web page https://golang.org/dl/

After installation, you would be able to program and run the code from any terminal.

What else?

Open your .go file in Visual Studio Code, it asks you something else. What was it?

"The "go-outline" command is not available. Run "go get -v github.com/ramya-rao-a/go-outline" to install."

What you need to do?

First, in Visual Studio Code set the the following in "settings.json" file.

"go.toolsGopath": "C:\\Go"

Note: If you are getting the following error, then click on "Install All"
The "go-outline" command is not available. Run "go get -v github.com/ramya-rao-a/go-outline" to install.

  • Get the location, where it is installing
  • Copy the bin and pkg folder contents to your Go installed folders.
  • Delete the folder which VS Code used to download the content.

That's all.. you should be able to code in Visual Studio Code as well without having 2 different go installed folders.

Happy Go coding!!

Install and configure latest Oracle Java JDK 8 and 7 in Ubuntu

Hi friends,

Today, I'll try to explain the way how to install the latest Oracle Java JDK 8 and 7.

Pre-requisites

Ubuntu 12.02 or above

Procedure

We can install in two ways
  1. Using PPA
  2. Manual Installation

PPA installation

  • Open terminal from "Applications" or press key combination "Ctrl+Alt+T"
  • Type the following commands in sequence
    • $ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
    • $ sudo apt-get update
  • To install latest JDK 8, type the following command
    • $ sudo apt-get install oracle-java8-installer
  • To install latest JDK 7, type the following command
    • $ sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer
  • Once the download complete, it will ask for agree for terms and conditions
  • Click on "OK" to complete the installation

Manual Installation

  • Download the Oracle JDK from the following official link
  • Extract the downloaded zip (Example "jdk-1.8.0.25.tar.gz")
  • It will create a folder with name "jdk-1.8.0.25"
  • Create a folder "java-8-oracle" under "/usr/lib/jvm" folder
    • $ sudo mkdir -p /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-oracle
  • Move the folder contents to /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-oracle
    • $ mv jdk-1.8.0.25/* -rf /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-oracle/

Configure the java executables

Configuration can only be done if more than one JDK is installed.

To configure java execute the following command

$ sudo update-alternatives --config java

Example output if Java 7 and Java 8 installed
There are 2 choices for the alternative java (providing /usr/bin/java).

  Selection    Path                                     Priority   Status
------------------------------------------------------------
  0            /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle/jre/bin/java   2         auto mode
  1            /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle/jre/bin/java   2         manual mode
* 2            /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-oracle/jre/bin/java   1         manual mode

Similar way you can do for javac, javaws and other executables

Configure javac

$ sudo update-alternatives --config javac

Configure javaws

$ sudo update-alternatives --config javaws

Happy java coding guys :)

Android Virtual Device (AVD) Emulator Creation and Installing APK on Emulator Using Command Line

Dear friends,

Every time whenever we are using most of the Android developers are using Eclipse or some other IDE to create and start the AVD.

I was just thought of using it via command line in my Ubuntu because I was very lazy to start and wait for Eclipse to get ready. I just want to try some apk on Emulator.

Ubuntu Procedure

Open terminal
I was hoping that you had already included the Android tools, platform-tools in PATH. If not just do that else navigate to Android SDK directory

Create AVD:

Syntax:
$ android create avd -n -t --abi

target-ids are based on the installed Android platforms. Its not the Android API Level.

abi(Application Binary Interface): The ABI is used to control which machine code will run on a given hardware device. For example, for an Android application to run on an x86 device, it is necessary to include x86 ABI support when compiling the application.

Example:
$ android avd -n MyJB -t 12 --abi armeabi-v7a

To view the target-ids list and supported ABI for target-id, execute the following command

$ android list targets

You might be getting some output similar to this

Available Android targets:
----------
id: 1 or "android-3"
     Name: Android 1.5
     Type: Platform
     API level: 3
     Revision: 4

Netbeans Plugin Install, Update, Problem, Troubleshoot

Dear all,

I was facing an issue while updating my netbeans. It was showing the following screen

I tried to  resolve this problem by checking the proxy configuration, firewall configuration, refreshing the content. None of them solved my problem.
Note: You please try all those settings, it may work for you. If none the above configuration solves your problem then follow the below solutions.

I have found 2 solutions to resolve/troubleshoot this problem.

a) Manual Update
  1. Copy the path of the networking problem link
  2. Download the .nbm file
  3. In Netbeans, Click on Tools (Menu) -> Select "Plugins" option
  4. Select the tab "Downloaded" -> Click "Add Plugins"
  5. Choose the appropriate .nbm file from the downloaded directory
  6. Click "Open" to view in the "Downloaded" tab
  7. Check the plugin and Click on "Install" button
  8. Now the Netbeans plugin will be updated and it will auto download the dependencies
Note: Above Screens are of Netbeans IDE 7.0.1. For your netbeans IDE the options may be different menus but the procedure is same.
  • Pros: Easy to install the specified/chosen plugin and update
  • Cons:
    • Issue: While updating, if it was not able to get the dependency, then it will show the same "Networking Problem"
    • Resolution: Follow the same procedure from step 1

b) Automatic Update:

  1. In Netbeans, Click on Tools (Menu) -> Select "Plugins" option
  2. Select the tab "Settings"
  3.
  4. Click "Add" button to add a plugin update center
  5.
  6. Enter the name and path of the plugin update center and Click on "OK"
  7. It will auto-refresh the plugins available
Install Plugin:
You can download many netbeans plugins from "Available Plugins" tab of "Plugins" window.
Install your own choice of plugins and enjoy application development with Netbeans.
